Founded by Emmanuel de Buretel and Eric Bielsa in May 2004, Because Group first made a name for itself with its majority holding in Corida group, the company created by Jacques Renault and Assaad Debs, to produce tours by French artists (Manu Chao, les Rita Mitsouko, Emilie Simon, Phoenix, Justice), and international stars (Radiohead, Ben Harper, Chris Rea, Texas, Mark Knopfler /Dire Straits, Rammstein, Duffy, Charlie Winston), in addition to artist management (Manu Chao, Les Rita Mitsouko), as well as running several venues in Paris (La Cigale, Trabendo, La Boule Noire).
From the outset, the Because Group strategy was defined by its presence and activity in all areas of the music industry, becoming one of the pioneers of the 360° model that allowed it to closely monitor all aspects of its artists’ career development. With this in mind, Emmanuel de Buretel created the Because Music label which achieved worldwide success with the release of an album by Amadou & Mariam, Dimanche à Bamako, co-produced by Manu Chao. A number of prestigious signings further enriched the catalogue with international stars like Keziah Jones, Manu Chao and Les Rita Mitsouko, but also emerging artists such as Charlotte Gainsbourg or Justice (who have sold hundreds of thousands of records), and notably with the development of an urban department crowned by the success of Sefyu, Keny Arkana, Médine and more recently, Booba.
In parallel, Emmanuel de Buretel created Because Editions in 2005, and in less than five years this company has become the largest independent publisher in France with its own signings (Daft Punk, Justice) and prestigious catalogue sub-publishing agreements (with Imagem, Blue Mountain, Notting Hill etc.).
Because Group continues to extend its activities into a number of areas, notably in merchandise, the collection of royalties, and is developing its presence in London with the signing of critically acclaimed artists such as Metronomy, Django Django and Phantasy. Selah Sue’s success in Europe has only reinforced this trend.
2010 sees Because Group clearly positioned in Europe as one of the leading independents in the music sector, and one of the rare companies able to offer the whole range of services that an artist needs in order to pursue a successful career. To achieve this, Because Group is active in five sectors of activity:
After just five years of existence, the quality of its development work, the reputation of its teams and their results, have been richly rewarded. Because Group has signed international stars like Moby or, lately, Prince, who gladly entrusted the Group with the launch of his latest record and the organisation of a sell-out? concert at La Cigale.
